Freezing outside - but warm in the pool!

Returning from the holiday break, the students were pleased to know that SWIMMING was the next unit!  I find myself saying this often - BUT, this is certainly one of the kids' favorite units.  Each swimming class begins with a fun warm-up game/activity to encourage the students to increase their body temperature, acclimate to the water, and to practice many of the previous swimming skills.  If we can play a tag in the gym - why can't we play a tag game in the pool?  Tag games are a favorite - using noodles, deck rings, balls, and kickboards.  Other warm-up activities utilize bobbing, buoyancy skills, listening skills (of course) and other previously learned skills.

After a 5-7 minute warm-up, students work on the grade level swimming skills.  Below are the following skills that will be covered during the first swimming unit:

First Grade:
Understand pool safety rules

Bobbing - perform 10 bobs with rhythmic breathing
flutter kick from deck side
Retrieve objects from bottom of pool
Prone float - on tummy
Supine float - on back
Step or jump off side (shallow end)
Floats:  turtle, jellyfish, starfish, superhero, and back float
flutter kick across the width of pool using kickboards
introduction to rhythmic breathing
finning on back
turn front to back - back to front
swim 5 yards using combined stroke on front with kick and alternating arm action

Second Grade 
Understand pool safety rules

Buoyancy floats
Retrieve objects in chest high water
Bob to safety from deep water to shallow
Jump into the shallow/deep water
Bob with rhythmic breathing
Flutter kick on front/back using kickboard from side to side of pool
Perform flutter on front 10 yards, back 10 yards
Glide on front/back 2 body lengths
Perform the front crawl 10 yards
Perform the back crawl 10 yards
Reverse direction from front to back
Tread water
Learn and follow safe diving rules

Third Grade
Understand safe pool rules
Deep water bobs with breathing
Experience with buoyancy - various bobs
Perform standing front dive
Swim front crawl 25 yards with rhythmic breathing
Swim back crawl 25 yards
Swim the elementary bckstroke 10 yards
Scull on back, Fin on back
Tread water
Prone Glide
Surface Diving
Jump in deep end
Perform extension rescues

Fourth Grade
Understand pool safety rules
Deep water bobs with breathing
Front dive
Long shallow dive
Breastroke 10 yards
Elementary backstroke - 10 yards
Back crawl - 25 yards
Reverse direction front front to back
Underwater swim 3 body lengths
Surface dives
Tread for one minute
Perform extension rescues
